Akbar Kader

Managing Director | Nan Guan Construction Pte. Ltd.

For the past 20 years, I have served SMCCI in various appointments. I set up the SME Centre for SMCCI in 2006 as I saw an opportunity to leverage on the government’s assistance to benefit the SMEs in particular the Malay/Muslim businesses.

Besides chairing the SMECentre for more than 10 years, I also developed several initiatives for SMCCI such as the Malay/Muslim Business conferences (4 years); the Business 101 series which translated to be the Protégé Kita program; networking sessions such as ‘teh tarek’ sessions, breakfast with CEOs, and more.

With the support from the team and the then members over the last 20 years, we were able to transform SMCCI from a debt-ridden organization to what it is now – cash rich and with a building of our own.

Although I may and am still serving some other organisations, SMCCI is still my first love. There is still a lot of work to be done to deliver more value to you, the members, and ultimately to the community. This can be achieved by having a diverse group of volunteers with a common passion of wanting to serve the members and the community. The landscape of business has been more challenging. I have interest in a number of businesses such as construction, security, venture capitalist and ID. Therefore, I understand the plight of the SMEs.

With my 20 years of experience and understanding the needs of the members and most importantly the network with the various partners, I believe I can serve you effectively.
